What is The 84 Movement?

The 84 represents the 84% of Massachusetts youth who did NOT smoke when the movement began. As of 2021, 97% of high school youth do NOT smoke cigarettes.

Youth groups in a school or community organization who want to fight against the tobacco and vaping industries sign up to become an 84 Chapter and be a part of the movement.

What do The 84 Chapters do?

  • Educate their peers and adults about the tobacco and vaping industries’ deceptive marketing tactics

  • Help to create change locally and statewide to reduce the influence of tobacco in their communities

  • Participate in workshops and statewide events to learn more about tobacco and racial justice

  • Get funding to complete projects related to public health in their communities

  • Host their own events in their schools and communities

The 84 is a program of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health’s Tobacco Cessation and Prevention Program, developed and managed in partnership with Health Resources in Action.
