Sarah Ryan, a senior at Holbrook Middle-High School and a member of the Statewide Leadership Team, is representing Massachusetts this year as a National Youth Ambassador for the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids.
To kick off the year, Sarah traveled to Washington, D.C. for the Youth Advocacy Symposium. There, alongside the 17 other students in her cohort, Sarah attended various advocacy trainings and prepared to meet with legislators on Capitol Hill.
Later in the week, Sarah met with the staff of Sen. Elizabeth Warren, Sen. Ed Markey, and Rep. Stephen Lynch to discuss Congress’s role in protecting youth from the danger of tobacco products. Specifically, she asked that they not undermine the authority of the FDA in regulating these products.
Sarah says, “This has been a really amazing opportunity for me so far. The other advocates are such talented, inspiring people and I’m glad to have them by my side as we continue this fight against the tobacco and vaping industries.”
Throughout the year, Sarah will work with the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids to plan local events, lobby against the industry, and train a minimum of 100 youth in Taking Down Tobacco.
