SLT Spotlight: Samaga!

What is your favorite after school snack?

Currently, my favorite snack is purple Doritos and Matcha from Dunkin

What made you want to join The 84 Movement?

I attended the Youth Summit and Kick Butts day in TEASA and really enjoyed both and admired the leadership of the youth who did the events so I decided I wanted to be one of them someday 🙂

What is your favorite part about being on the Statewide Leadership Team?

The people, whether that’s staff making space for the youth to lead or the youth leaders that are always willing to help out and volunteer, everyone is AMAZINGG!

What is one thing you HAVE to have in your backpack at all times?

A pencil…however, I will admit, even though I have a BUNCH, literally all of them are mechanical that don’t have lead so I struggle with finding lead-filled pencils among the many useless, empty ones.

What is your favorite hairstyle?

Braids. I used to watch my mother brush my hair from the mirror. It would be pulled back so sleek that not one fly away was seen from the reflection. Then she would braid my hair. The three split braids used to be so tight yet always loose by the next hour. Now every time I braid my hair, I think of her braiding my hair, her picking the prettiest hair tie, her yelling at me because I turned around too much, her laughing at my jokes, us having a good time, us enjoying our childhoods–I was a child growing up and she was an adult with a child learning to laugh, smile, and be a child again. We were both children enjoying childhood through braids. Now, I think about the childhood that I am growing up from every time I braid my hair, whether that’s while doing a fishtail or a dutch braid.

What is your favorite holiday?

I love Christmas vibes. The Christmas music playing inside Dunkins. The hands warming from the heat of hot chocolate and the snow melting inside boots. The spikes of the minty candy canes. The brightly lit up trees inside stores. The smell of fresh scents inside  Bath and Body Works (and their sales!) And lastly, the snowflakes that are really pretty to admire from the window, while watching shows and having cookies bake in the oven.

What is one of your favorite moments you have had working with the Statewide Leadership Team?

I really enjoy the beginning of our meetings because everyone is excited to see each other and respond to each other during icebreakers.

What is one message you have for other youth about their role in tobacco control?

It’s very important to remember that the blame should be on the tobacco companies, not the youth for addictions.
