Featured Chapter: Weymouth High School

Weymouth High School’s 84 Chapter has been very busy! This year, they have already participated in three activities including Magnified Warning Labels, Give ‘Em Something to Talk About, and You’re Spending How Much? which aim to raise awareness about the costs and risks of teens using tobacco.

Shawna Newcomb, an active member of Weymouth High School’s 84 Chapter said, “My favorite activity that I have participated in was the ‘You’re Spending How Much?’ activity. It was really interesting and shocking to find out how much people eventually end up spending on tobacco. The display that we made was very fun and rewarding. At a school where over 2,500 students attend, there is no question that the message was seen. “

Weymouth High School has been an active Chapter since its inception in 2009, and currently has over thirty student members. In 2009, they received a mini-grant for two competitions: the iCon Contest and iConnect Competition. The 84 youth from Weymouth submitted twenty-six entries for the Digital Media Contest in 2009, winning second place in the Biggest Advocate category. In 2010, they also participated in the Quest for the Golden Ticket competition.

The 84 represents the 84% of Massachusetts teens who choose not to smoke.
