Pharmacies in Brookline, Lowell, and Wareham counties will no longer sell tobacco products. Public health advocates along with youth from The 84 Chapters testified that the sale of tobacco products undermine pharmacies’ efforts to promote health and wellness and sends conflicting messages to consumers. This ban “helps to correct the contradiction of businesses that sell health and wellness products and also cigarettes which can cause numerous health issues,” says Bob Collett, director of the Cape Cod Regional Tobacco Control Program.
Youth from several Chapters of The 84 were instrumental in the passage of the ban. On October 6th two peer leaders from the Brookline High School Chapter testified at the Brookline Health and Human Services Advisory Committee Hearing in support of the proposed ban, citing their own experiences in youth smoking cessation to urge its passage.
On November 2, 2011 youth members of the Lowell Community Health Center Teen Coalition also testified in support of the proposed ban to the Lowell Board of Health at City Hall. Their testimony helped the Board pass the ban with a vote of 2-1.
On November 30th, the Wareham Board of Health passed a similar ban that will affect Walmart, Rite-Aid, and CVS locations. The 84 Chapters involved in the passage of this ban include New Bedford Mayor’s Youth Council from the YWCA Southeastern MA, RAPPP Stars from RAPPP Program Southcoast Hospitals Group, and Team C from Greater New Bedford Youth Development, Inc.
The 84 youth were instrumental in achieving this victory by making their voices heard and standing up to Big Tobacco.
