Congratulations to the fifteen Massachusetts Chapters of The 84 Movement that were awarded mini grants in October! Each Chapter is implementing their funding awards differently, using the money for promotion, education, and advocacy strategies to fight Big Tobacco in their schools and communities. Since mid-November, Chapters have received training on how to implement their projects and will wrap up the training phase by the end of the year. Grant amounts ranged from $2,000 to $4,000 per Chapter.
One of the grantees, Girls, Inc. of Lynn, Massachusetts, is using their funds to complete a research and policy project. “Youth will work with MTCP Tobacco Control Officer, Joyce Redford, to complete a community mapping project. [The teens] will then present their research to the Lynn Board of Health in hopes of convincing the Board that by capping the number of tobacco licensees and increasing their annual license fee, they will be helping to reduce the number of youth who are exposed to tobacco on a daily basis,” says Cassandra Haughton, Coordinator of Substance Abuse Prevention Programs for Girls, Inc. Phoebe Jean, a member of Girls, Inc. of Lynn, says the funding will also help to raise awareness. “Teens will know what they're getting into when they choose to smoke and they will know about all the facts and statistics and hopefully that will give them a reason not [to] smoke,” she says.
Another grantee, the Milford High School Chapter, has participated in activities for The Great American Smokeout, Sticker Shock, and Red Ribbon Awareness, and hopes to add new community awareness events with its grant funding. They will also be doing an assessment of tobacco ads in their community. Alexi Martinez, of Milford High School’s Chapter said, “Awareness is the absolute most important aspect of our club. The 84 Movement allows us to spread awareness in our community and the more informed students are, the more they will make good decisions.”
