MALDEN - The YWCA Malden’s TASK (Teen Advocates Sharing Knowledge) Leadership Development Program has been awarded a mini grant of $2,500 from The 84 Movement to work on an initiative to an initiative to educate concerned adults about the tactics used by the tobacco industry to target youth.
TASK is part of The 84 Movement, which helps mobilize youth to take action to protect their communities from the influence of the tobacco industry. The grant is one of fifteen awarded to youth groups from across the Commonwealth who are committed to fighting Big Tobacco in their neighborhoods and schools.
“Smoking is the number one preventable cause of disease and death in Massachusetts and in the world today, and we want our young people to realize that they have the power and the creativity to help prevent a new generation of people from becoming addicted to tobacco,” said Christina Murphy, TASK’s adult advisor.
YWCA Malden is an innovative community-based organization groups in Malden, with nearly 85 years of experience creating unique programs that help Malden’s at-risk populations. The major objective of YWCA’s Teen Services Programs are to support youth to ensure they successfully complete high school and are socially, emotionally and academically prepared to meet the challenges and embrace the opportunities life has to offer.
The 84 movement is funded by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health Tobacco Cessation and Prevention Program and is managed by Health Resources in Action.
