NORTHAMPTON - Northampton High School and Smith Vocational and Agricultural High School will share a $6,000 grant from the Department of Public Health for youth-led smoking prevention programs.
The two schools - along with Turners Falls High School - are among the latest to join the state Department of Public Health's "The 84 Movement" to combat tobacco industry tactics that target young people.
The name comed from the 84 percent of teens statewide who choose not to smoke, according to the program's Web site.
School-based chapters of The 84 hold events such as the Great American Smokeout and Kick Butts Day.
In recent years, they have also helped lobby for policies such as banning tobacco sales in pharmacies.
Other public high schools in the Pioneer Valley that have The 84 chapters include Easthampton High School and South Hadley High School.
The Hampshire Council of Governments Tobacco Free Community Patnership provides technical assistance and support to those chapters.
