MIDDLEBORO — Middleboro Youth Advocates of Lifehouse Church in Middleboro has been awarded a $3,000 grant from The 84 Movement to work on an initiative to conduct a Community Conversations Project.

The Middleboro Youth Advocates is part of The 84 Movement, which helps mobilize youth to take action to protect their communities from the influence of the tobacco industry. The grant is one of 15 awarded to youth groups from across the Commonwealth who are committed to fighting "Big Tobacco" in their neighborhoods and schools.

"Smoking is the number one preventable cause of disease and death in Massachusetts and in the world today, and we want our young people to realize that they have the power and the creativity to help prevent a new generation of people from becoming addicted to tobacco," said Judith Coykendall, program manager of the Seven Hills Tobacco-Free Community Partnership serving 59 communities in Southeastern Massachusetts.

Greg Kelly, student-youth liaison for the Middleboro Youth Advocates, further explained, "We are expecting brilliant results from our youth and the Middleboro community in the fight against Big Tobacco. Education and mobilization are two of the key ingredients in making any positive change to the status quo.

"The youth in Middleboro have their work cut out for them, but they truly are standing up and being the change. Hopefully other communities across Massachusetts will follow their lead."

The 84 movement is funded by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health Tobacco Cessation and Prevention Program and is managed by Health Resources in Action.
