MALDEN - The Malden YWCA has been awarded a $2,500 grant to educate adults about the tobacco's industry's efforts to market to youth.
"Smoking is the number one preventable cause of disease and death in Massachusetts and in the world today," said Christina Murphy, supervisor for the youth program, in a statement. "We want our young people to realize that they have the power and the creativity to help prevent a new generation of people from becoming addicted to tobacco."
The grant is one of 15 awarded throughout the Commonwealth by The 84 Movement, which is funded by the state Department of Public Health Tobacco Cessation and Prevention program.
