Boston youth testifies at the public hearing

Nov 23, 2011
Boston’s youth are speaking out against the tobacco industry’s influence on their generation. More than twenty young people attended the Board of Health’s public hearing hosted by the Boston Public Health Commission on Tuesday, October 4th, representing Codman Square, South Boston, Franklin Field/ Franklin Hill, and Roxbury to name a few.

The Board of Health is considering two new tobacco regulations that would limit the availability of tobacco to Boston-area teens. The first regulation is a proposed ban on the sale of individual cigars. In a letter to the Board of Health, Danielle Cadet, 84 Chapter member at Excel High School, reinforced the importance of this ban, saying, “Single cigars are easier to purchase than if they were in a pack. Additionally, by removing individual cigars from their original packaging, consumers are not aware of the health issues associated with the product.”

In total, 20 letters of support were submitted to the Board of Health. John Ngyuen represented The 84’s Youth Leadership Team at the hearing. He stated, “If any teens think that their voice doesn't count, then they should come to [these hearings] and see many teens fight for something with their own voice. Every voice
counts. It truly was a learning moment.”

The Board of Health will vote on the proposed tobacco regulations on December 1st.

The 84 represents the 84% of Massachusetts teens who choose not to smoke.
