FDA talks to youth in MA

Nov 23, 2011
As you know, you’re never too young to have your voice heard. Decision-makers want to hear from teens, especially since you are the next generation of advocates and voters who will shape the future. For the first time, The 84 members had their voices heard by Federal government officials.

Twenty teens and twelve adults from seven states came together to flex their advocacy muscles in Boston on Tuesday, September 13th. The group (which included youth from several Massachusetts-based organizations including BOLD Teens in Dorchester, Boston Trinity Academy in Hyde Park, YWCA TASK in Malden, and HOPE Coalition in Worcester) spoke with representatives from the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) Center for Tobacco Products (CTP).

Dr. Lawrence R. Deyton, the Center for Tobacco Product’s Director, answered their questions about the FDA’s role in regulating tobacco products (e.g. cigarettes and chew tobacco), how the FDA can better reduce tobacco use among youth, and what the Center is doing to increase communication with young people and support their efforts to fight tobacco in their communities. After attending the meeting, Diany Martinez from the Boston Trinity Academy said, “I would tell other youth that change WILL happen. They would be surprised as to how much the FDA can do and how much teens will do.”

The 84 represents the 84% of Massachusetts teens who choose not to smoke.
