FALL RIVER — The BOLD Coalition's TADA youth group has been awarded a $2,500 grant from The 84 Movement to work on an initiative to conduct a Community Conversations Project.
The 84 Movement helps mobilize youth to take action to protect their communities from the influence of the tobacco industry. The grant is one of 15 awarded to youth groups from across the Commonwealth who are committed to fighting Big Tobacco in their neighborhoods and schools.
“Smoking is the number one preventable cause of disease and death in Massachusetts and in the world today, and we want our young people to realize that they have the power and the creativity to help prevent a new generation of people from becoming addicted to tobacco,” said Judith Coykendall, Program Manager of the Seven Hills Tobacco-Free Community Partnership serving 59 communities in Southeastern Massachusetts.
Michael Aguiar, SSTAR Youth Program Director and TADA advisor further explained “This funding will provide us with an opportunity to have an honest dialog with grassroots community groups about the tactics used by Big Tobacco to lure young people into using tobacco products. The tobacco companies are extremely well financed and use that on slick advertising campaigns that target young people."
The 84 movement is funded by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health Tobacco Cessation and Prevention Program and is managed by Health Resources in Action.
