The Beacon Friday, February 25, 2011: Last week, not smoking was the buzz around the Rockport Schools. Teens from the Y’s SALADD Program (Students and Leaders against Destruction Decisions) launched the “84 Campaign” at Rockport Middle and High School. “The 84” is a Massachusetts-wide campaign for students to be smoke free. The name comes from the 84 percent of teens in Massachusetts who chose not to smoke cigarettes.
Students have been formally committing to be cigarette free.
“So far, we have 192 students who have signed the pledge, and the number is s till growing.” said Nikki Klink, the director of the YMCA Ben Beyea Youth and Teen Center in Rockport. Klink is an advisor to The 84 Group, along with Jeanne Pratt, the school nurse.
“What is going on with The 84 is really exciting,” said Pratt, “this is a great step for Rockport!”
Rockport SALADD Students are starting an 84 Club that will meet monthly at Rockport High School. Any interested student is welcome to join.
