The 84 Youth Gain Knowledge and Skills at Youth Leadership Retreat

Watch out Big Tobacco! The 84 youth are now using their weekends to become even stronger and more united in their efforts to fight tobacco marketing to kids! On February 10-11th, thirty-two teens and three staff members from The 84 gathered at the Essex Conference and Retreat Center for a weekend packed with opportunities for training, education, socialization, and skill-building.

The trainings focused on peer leadership, planning and presentation skills, and introduced the teens to the Peer Leadership/Education model. Arianna Smith of the Silver City Teen Center Chapter has been involved with The 84 for two years. After attending the retreat, she said, “[Over the past two years] I have grown in the sense that I want to learn more and teach more things to others. I will use my new-found knowledge to train my Chapter and will use my new presentation skills as well.” Student attendees also participated in tobacco prevention workshops and even began to plan and practice putting on their own workshops.

But don’t think that the weekend was all work and no play! Teens had a chance to get to know one another through icebreakers and games like blob tag. On Friday night, they even enjoyed a bon fire with ‘smores followed by movies and games to unwind after a productive day. Arianna said, “Some of the many fun parts for me were the dance party, the bon fire, and the outdoor games we all played!” The 84 youth returned to their Chapters with renewed energy, along with new skills and strategies to share their important message with their peers. Be on the look-out for their upcoming Chapter updates on The84.org!

The 84 represents the 84% of Massachusetts teens who choose not to smoke.
