The 84 Award Festival 2010

On Saturday, May 8th, youth and adult supporters from all over Massachusetts gathered to celebrate the creativity and leadership of youth who are part of The 84. The 84 Awards Festival was held in honor of Film Shorts Contest Finalists, Kick Butts Day Committee members, and Youth Leadership Award winners at WCVB-TV Channel 5 studios in Needham.

There were opportunities for guests to mingle and meet new people while finding out more about The 84. Then, we watched the top 18 entries in the film shorts contest. Youth emcees Kayla Mendonca and Enxhi Popa presented awards to the top films in each region of the state and in each film short category. The committee of youth who planned Kick Butts Day in March was also recognized as were Youth Leadership Award winners in the six regions of the State. Melanie McFadyen, the Statewide Youth Leadership Award winner gave a touching speech about her personal fight against tobacco.

The end of the event was truly inspirational as youth, adult advisors, and family members pledged to continue the fight against Big Tobacco. Their agreements to take action in their communities will undoubtedly further The 84 Movement throughout Massachusetts.

The 84 represents the 84% of Massachusetts teens who choose not to smoke.
