This week we held our first official 84 event at our school. The school nurses have always done Great American Smoke Out (GASO) activities around the school, but this year we teamed up with The84 to bring in our new ideas and activities.
Tuesday afterschool once everyone was out of the school, our 84 chapter members, hung up the Big Tobacco quotes. We wanted to create a buzz around the school and see what the students and faculty would say.
During school on Wednesday, we listened and talked to teachers and other students about the signs. We made an announcement about the signs and told everyone to look for The84 on Thursday during lunch. We also asked the principal if we could post the quotes on the TV's around the school (see pictures), he was really on board and had the IT guy, Nick, put them on the TV's so more people could see! Some students and faculty were really taken back by the quotes and could not believe that they really said those things. It really got people talking! Afterschool on Wednesday, once everyone was out of the school, we put the stickers over the quotes to encourage students to Speak Out!
Thursday is finally here! The first GASO as a part of the 84! We made another announcement to see The84 during all three lunch periods. We got the custodian to set up a table for us. We put our SADD table cloth on the table, spread out the cards for people to write on, put out permanent markers so the messages would stand out, laid out The84 buttons and put out some Dum-dum lollipops as a parting gift for writing a message to Big Tobacco companies.
