Tobacco Free Pharmacies!

We are pleased to announce that Lowell will have Tobacco Free Pharmacies!

On November 2, 2011 youth members of the Lowell Community Health Center Teen Coalition, Ashley Pham, Amara Sok, Jake Conlon, Amaris Sok, Youth Leadership Program Coordinator Sochenda Uch, Program Assistant Bunkeath Meng testified and supported the propose ban of tobacco products in health facilties such as pharmacies to the Lowell Board of Health at City Hall in the Mayors reception Room.

Youth of the Health Center are members of the Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drugs Task Force which is a taksforce under the Greater Lowell Health Alliance (GLHA)

With the group were community members and leaders who also spoke and came out to support this effort. Resident and parent Kirsten Doherty, Founder and past Chair of the Lowell Roundtable on Substance Abuse Prevention Tami Gouvea, UMass Student and resident Megan Lewis, Tobacco Program Director Cesar Pungirum, and D.J Wilson Attorney and Tobacco Control Director, Massachusetts Municipal Association (Boston, Massachusetts) and Dahvy Tran Coordinator of the Greeater Lowell Health Alliance.

The effort to ban tobacco products from health facilities was lead by Cesar Pungirum who had put together the report and submitted the proposal. This action lead to collaborations with commuity members and youth from the Health Center. A hearing was then schedule to address the issue. The Board of Health were able to vote on the propose ban of Tobacco products in health facilities in favor with a vote of 2-1.

Lowell has joined other communities across Massachusetts in the fight against big time Tobacco!
