October 22-October 31

This week of October is RED RIBBON WEEK! Red Ribbon week is the oldest and largest drug prevention campaign in the country that raises awareness. This national event commemorates Enrique “KiKi” Camarena who died in March 1985. He ended up being kidnapped on February 7, 1985 and was found a month later in a shallow grave. He was tortured to death. In honor of Camarena, hundreds pledge to live a drug-free life! The slogan of Red Ribbon Week is “It’s up to me to be drug free!” The color red represents awareness and is a stand-out color. At our coalition, we handed out hand made red ribbons and hand made buttons (in the picture provided). We asked those who choose to wear these to pass on the message and give others ribbons as well. Here at our youth space, we pledge  to be tobacco, alcohol, and drug free!

The 84 represents the 84% of Massachusetts teens who choose not to smoke.
