2011 Kickoff & Training

2011 Kickoff & Training

This past Saturday October 22nd marked the biggest turn out ever in The 84’s kickoff history! Over 200 youth from The 84 Chapters gathered to kick off a new year of taking action against Big Tobacco!

Chapters will be promoting The 84, working towards policy change in their communities, and recruiting new Chapter members during 2011-2012. Youth took part in energizing workshops throughout the day, were trained on how to carry out their tobacco prevention work for the year, and had fun exploring the new activities in store for Chapters (particularly the Great American Smokeout activity)! Whether it was meeting new people and making connections (some made new friends at the expo photo booth with crazy wigs and big sunglasses!), signing a petition for tobacco-free baseball parks, casting a vote in a Chapter email naming contest, getting schooled on the deceptions of Big Tobacco, or practicing their skills, youth and their advisors had an exciting (and exhausting!) Saturday in Worcester, MA.

The 84 even held its own pep rally – Chapter members were really energized and loudly chanted against Big Tobacco, “WE ARE THE 84 AND WE WON’T TAKE THIS ANYMORE!” They really stirred things up.

The 84 Chapter Toolkits for 2011-2012 were handed out at the end of the day and youth were excited to get started on their policy work and promoting The 84 in their schools and communities. They left equipped with skills and with a sense of excitement knowing that there is power in numbers, and that they are part of an incredible group of youth building a tobacco-free movement!
